Honduran Marriage Certificate
The consulates of Honduras in the United States offer various services to its citizens, among them the application for a Marriage Certificate.
If you are a Honduran citizen residing in the United States and you need your Marriage Certificate, here we offer you a clear and simple guide on how to complete this procedure.
Why is the Marriage Certificate important?
The Marriage Certificate is an official document that validates the marital union between two people.
Not only does it prove the legal relationship, but it is also crucial for procedures such as applying for a green card in the United States, legitimizing a child, processing a divorce and, in many cases, for genealogical research processes.
Process to apply for a Marriage Certificate from the U.S.
- Online Marriage Certificate: If you are in the United States, you have the option of requesting your marriage certificate online. This is done through a related person in Honduras, who must have a power of attorney granted by you to carry out this procedure.
- The related person must go to the National Registry of the Municipality where the marriage was registered.
- You must present the full names and identity cards of both spouses.
- Request a copy of the Marriage Folio certified and authenticated by the pertinent authorities.
- This copy must be authenticated at the General Secretariat of the National Registry of Persons in Tegucigalpa and subsequently apostilled at the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Tegucigalpa.
- Once the process is completed, the related person can send you the legalized copy.
- Application through the Honduran Consulate in the United States:
- Go to the Honduran consulate nearest you.
- Provide your personal data and wait for the confirmation of the time the process will take.
- It should be noted that, due to high demand, the wait can be up to one month.
- Required documents:
- Photocopy of identity card of both spouses.
- Proof of marital status.
- For procedures outside Honduras, the certificate must be authenticated and apostilled.
Additional considerations:
- If you are seeking the marriage certificate for U.S. immigration purposes, you will need the “Folio de Matrimonio”.
- Resumes, literals, certifications and their annotations are not accepted for visa processing.
- Minutes prior to 1984 are usually handwritten and stamped with the RNP’s seal. However, since 2000, the folios have been typed.
Obtaining a Marriage Certificate as a U.S. resident may seem complicated, but with the right information and following the steps properly, the process is simplified.
Whether you do it online or directly through the consulate, it is essential to be clear about the necessary documents and requirements to avoid inconveniences. Remember to always seek advice or support at the nearest Honduran consulate to receive personalized guidance.
