How to obtain a Honduran cedula in the United States?
Obtaining a Honduran cedula (Identity Card) while you are in the United States means that you should apply through a Honduran consulate or embassy in the U.S.
Here is a general process for this:
Hondurans residing in the United States who wish to obtain or renew their identity card, now known as National Identification Document (DNI), can follow these steps:
- Processing Places: The consulates of Honduras in the United States are the designated points to carry out the procedure. As of April 25, Hondurans in the DMV area (District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia) can apply for the DNI. It is expected that this service will gradually expand to other states, such as Oregon, Tennessee, Rhode Island, Texas, among others.
- Appointment Scheduling: It is essential to schedule an appointment before visiting the consulate. To do so, you can go to www.citaconsular.sreci.gob.hn or www.citaconsular.com and follow the instructions.
- Required Documentation: Although not all required documents are specified, it is likely that the above ID card or other valid identification will be required. Since the DNI replaces the matricula consular and the sworn letter of nationality, these documents could be useful in the process.
- Characteristics of the DNI: The new DNI is bilingual (in English and Spanish). In its previous part, it includes the migrant’s local address in the United States. This feature gives it validity and recognition as a true identification card (ID card) in U.S. territory. The country’s Vice Chancellor, Tony Garcia, has emphasized that this document will provide a clearer idea of the number of Hondurans residing outside the country, thus helping to better understand the migrant population in the United States.
- Waiting Time: After applying at the consulate, applicants must wait approximately one to two months to receive the DNI. This duration is due to the printing process carried out by the National Registry of Persons (RNP) of Honduras, subsequent delivery to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and, finally, distribution to the corresponding consulates.
- Cost: It is relevant to point out that the first issuance of the DNI for Hondurans abroad is free of charge, according to recent decisions of the Honduran government administration.
With this initiative, the Honduran government seeks not only to provide official identification to its citizens abroad, but also to gather valuable information about its diaspora and strengthen ties with the migrant community.
